FMP Proposal

FMP Proposal
Let There Be Light!
Introduction:
For this project I will produce an installation exploring the relationship between chaos and order.
This is an experimental composition of light and colour demonstrating how beauty can be perceived in an unattractive environment.
In this work I will question the ways that we define chaos and order / attractive and unattractive.
Opportunity:
I plan to explore the impact that light has on different objects using mostly recycled house hold materials and different light sources. I propose to set up an installation that will demonstrate the relationship between what the eye can see and how it can be manipulated to create something different, how perspective and perception are two sides of the same coin. I wish to examine how elements in the space can be perceived in the eye of an individual based on subjective personalities and past experiences.
Objectives:
I am currently using a small space at college to experiment with different materials and projectors, however if need be my work can be set at any location. On this section I will consider the two options.
Option 1 - maintaining the space I am currently using.
The space:
Simulates a room, painted black throughout and raised over the ground. The dimensions are approximately 1X2 meters. In the space there is access to plug sockets.
Inside the space I will set up the installation as well as projectors that will project the light onto the centre of it, enlarging the scene onto the opposite wall to be viewed by the audience.
Option 2 - installing in an open space.
The space:
The installation can be placed in any space but will require adjustments and further consideration of health and safety issues. The dimensions depend on available screens/walls.
Adjusting the projectors according to the amount of light coming in and taking into consideration the use of either walls or screens put up to project onto, the installation will be centred and the projection will be onto opposite walls/screens. The audience will be able to view the installation from a wide angle.

The installation:
Positioned in the centre, close to the far third of the space on a stand (hopefully transparent or alternatively painted black) and hanged from the ceiling.
3 projectors placed on the floor in an angle projecting the scene onto the 3 walls creating a panorama image.

I am considering using audio for this project. For this I will explore how a radio can be used to broadcast white noise within the limits of a closed space without causing interference to other students in the studio and other exhibitors.  In the occasion of not having a specific closed space I will have to dismiss this idea for the reasons stated above.

Outcome:
Seeing the centred object made of recycled materials enlarged and ordered on the wall will create a range of emotions for the audience as they respond to both chaos and order almost simultaneously.

Health and safety issues that need to be considered when presenting in an open space:
Surrounding the installation and preventing the audience from coming too close to it will be necessary. Also, I will need to make sure all cables are covered and plug sockets are not approachable.
If using screens, they will have to be secured in a way that nothing falls over the audience.

Resources:
For this installation I will need the following:

·         Space that will allow both hanging from the ceiling and placing of stand(s).

·         Stand(s).

·         3 Projectors that will project a wide beam. At least one of them should be able to project slides as well.

·         2-3 walls to project onto. Alternatively, 2-3 screens.

·         Accessibility to plug sockets.

·         Fishing wire.

·         Construction for the projectors. In the occasion that the projectors will need to be held to the walls/ ceiling.
Management plan – Timeframe:

Week 1 1-6/5
Exploring materials and how they show when being projected onto.
Week 2 8-13/5
Building the stand and placing it
Week 3 15-20/5
Start placing the materials onto the stand and decide what needs to be hung off the ceiling.
Week 4 22-27/5
Installing the ceiling piece and placing sources of light (projectors)
Week 5 29/5 – 3/6
Finalizing the location of the projectors, finishing placing the central construction and securing it.
Week 6 5-10/6
Final adjustments of projectors, and central constructions
Week 7 12, 13/6
Setting up – finishing touches if need be.
Week 7 14/6
Exhibition day: Turn on the projectors and radio.

Idea No 4 - The creation of the world

The creation of the world is something I wanted to do for a while. Inspired and driven by my past experience on this course, I would like to push myself further and produce 6 textile pieces that presents the 6 days of creation.

Using the biblical text in Hebrew, as this is my origin and adding the text in English as well for the audience. As a young child in Israel we start listening to biblical stories from a very young age regardless our beliefs. They are simply stories, but they are a great part of our heritage.

My idea is to use different colours and patterns to create 6 pieces about 40cm by 40cm each using different fabrics and layouts. It is more of sculpting with fabric because the 3D effect is a major attribute to the piece. Another thing that is important will be choosing the right material. Some of the layers should be see-through while other should be heavier and controlling the background. Landscapes and depths, perspectives etc. although I plan on creating an abstract piece, I am hoping that whoever looking at this will be able to tell immediately what the subject of the piece is.

I am hoping to use beads and shiny elements and combining them into my work. Still there is a lot to consider but I am hoping to deliver and idea of heavenly experience. I am looking forwards to work on this piece, even if it will not be for the purpose of the FMP, I have no doubt I will execute it sooner or later. This is the one idea I am truly passionate about.

Idea No 3 - Light and shadow art

Inspired and drawn by light and shadow, I am curious to see what I can produce. I started with polystyrene surface thinking I can stick skewers in it to hold a decent piece of art. The material I am trying is Acrylic panels and sunlight that comes through the window.

I started by gathering pieces of acrylic leftovers from the 3D studio. Obviously these will not be the shapes I will chose should I chose to go further with the idea but for now it will work, assuming I will be able to produce something with it.

2 hours into the project, I realised my initial idea of using tape to hold the acrylic shapes to the skewers was a very bad idea. It just didn’t hold and everything kept moving around so I moved on to using glue gun. Again, the idea at this point is just to investigate the material and how to use it, seeing I never tried anything like this before.

Things to consider while working with acrylic plates/health and safety issues:

·         The Acrylic plates are sharp. Very sharp.

·         When trying to break them (as I have no appropriate equipment at home) chips will break and fly around. It is important use eye goggles and pick up all little splinters off the floor and working surface.

·         Hot glue gun can burn and set fire.

Starting to play with paper I am enjoying it more now although it is hard to manipulate the paper to create the shadow I have in my vision. I keep ending up sculpting the paper hoping it will cast a shadow in the same manner a body does and that is not at all the point.

I am pleased that the paper can be printed with the same images I am trying to achieve when casting the light (Birds, for example) but doing so does diminish the audience intellect. I know I would have been annoyed seeing an art work that literally pushes the idea in my face and not letting me enjoy it or figure it out myself. Maybe the audience sees something different? Isn’t that the point of art?

The more I think about this idea the less I like it. In fact, I am feeling I’m being pushed away from my initial idea of 7 days of creation. Whichever way I look at it I feel inadequate and lacking experience. I don’t think it will be wise to experiment with new things for a final project. Again and again, I am thinking of my strengths and the things I really enjoy making, how I felt about the other ideas and how drawn I was to each and every one of them  and this one feels nothing like the previous ones.

Idea No 2: Human impact on the planet

I started by collaging images of landscape, water and animals – all representing days 2-6 of creation. My idea is to show how human impact on the world, how everything we do actually impacts the world, starting from the basic thing: taking one step.

Gathering the images from the internet is one way of creating the collage, but it is not the best creative way, although I am not focusing on the images but on the cover, on which people will step while walking into the room. I believe the place for my piece will be on the floor, where people will be forced to step on. I have heard about interactive installations where people felt uncomfortable taking part and “destroy” the artwork, but I am hoping they will be encouraged to do so if it is placed somewhere they will not be able to avoid. This is not a wall piece!

At some point I had an idea to put paint in tray where people will be asked to step on a painting/photograph but it will ruin their shoes and I cannot have that, so as much as I like the idea of different shoe prints on my painting I will have to dismiss this idea and carry on with the paint cover.

One question needs to be asked: am I going to use images from the internet or should I paint the images on the floor? (Well, not really ON the floor). Again, all depends on time. Of course, if I paint the images, it doesn’t have to be realistic as they will be covered by black paint.

The black paint cover:

To start with, I used kid’s plain paint in a sandwich bag. It does cover the surface nice and does the work for a small area. If I chose to take this idea forward I want to try and mix different mixtures in bags to see how it feels:

·         Paint with cooking oil

·         Paint with water

·         Paint with liquid soap

·         Paint with glitters

·         Acrylic paint (way too expensive, I will need to mix it with water and lots of it).

For the moment I am using sandwich bags but I will have to come up with a better idea for the paint. It has to be transparent and flexible but also strong as people will be walking over it. There are very strong plastic wraps that I can use but I’m not sure how to seal them yet.

Animal exploitation

The next step of human impact on nature was to explore animal exploitation. Going through some images, I picked up the “relevantly pleasant to the eye” as I want to provoke and arise thinking but I don’t want to disgust and create antagonism. It seems there will be forever a very fine line between the two and I am determined not to cross it.

Using photos of farm animals at the moment, hiding them behind windows (the basic windows we used to cut of cards). Again, the topic is “we rather not see” and I am debating if I should use images/painting of eyes on the windows, and if so, should I use “beautiful” eyes, artistic and appealing or will it take the focus of what is behind the windows? It might actually be very surprising seeing the images behind the windows if the eyes are artistically appealing, and it will be another type of metamorphosis, of emotions and feelings this time.

The more I look at it; I’m thinking it will look good in a 3D apartment house model where the windows can open towards the viewer. Again, if I chose to take this idea further I will explore this option.

The other option of executing this idea is using material. I tried using transparent material and I like it. Layering the different shades together gives and interesting effect, one can decide if they want to investigate deeper and actually focus on what is behind the material or they can walk away, and the images are not slapping the audience in the face.

However, if I chose to use material, I will have to frame the pieces and make sure the material is pulled straight over the image. At the moment it is cello taped in my sketchbook and doesn’t look very good, especially because of overlapping in a very amateur way.

Looking up at the 3D model idea, the material can also use as type of curtains, hiding/revealing the images.
